Most smart feeder problems come down to three things: the mechanism, the network, and the cats. Working through them in that order solves the majority of issues without a support ticket.
How does an automatic cat feeder work?
A hopper holds kibble above a dispensing mechanism. On a timed cycle, an auger rotates and moves a set volume of food into the bowl below. The app tells the controller when to run and how much to dispense. Because the mechanism measures volume rather than weight, portion accuracy depends on kibble size staying consistent — which is also why some models add electronic weighing.
Do automatic cat feeders jam?
They can, and the causes are predictable:
- Kibble too large or irregular. The most common cause. A piece that bridges the auger stalls the whole cycle.
- Mixed food. Kibble plus treats, or kibble plus freeze-dried pieces, wedges differently than uniform kibble.
- Moisture. Humidity makes kibble swell and stick. Keep the hopper lid sealed and the feeder away from damp floors.
- Overfilling. Packing the hopper above the fill line increases pressure on the auger.
If your model has an anti-jam dispensing structure it will clear small blockages itself; otherwise clear the chute, return to a single uniform kibble, and test one portion at a time.
Why does my smart feeder disconnect from WiFi?
The feeder is rarely the cause. Check, in order:
- Band. Many IoT devices work only on 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz-only network will drop them. Confirm your model’s supported bands in its manual.
- Signal. Kitchens, concrete walls and metal appliances block 2.4 GHz. Move the feeder or add coverage.
- Client isolation / AP isolation. If the router isolates wireless clients, the feeder cannot reach the cloud.
- Address changes. Reserve a fixed IP for the feeder so it is not reassigned.
- Router reboot or password change. The device keeps the old credentials.
How to set up a WiFi cat feeder
- Place the feeder within good 2.4 GHz coverage, on a stable surface.
- Power it on and wait for the pairing indicator.
- In the app, start pairing and enter your 2.4 GHz network credentials — not the 5 GHz one.
- Let the app push time and timezone, then run one test portion.
- Set the schedule with a margin: a meal that lands late is better than one that piles up.
Why does my smart feeder disconnect from WiFi?
If it connects and then drops repeatedly, note whether it drops at the same time of day. Regular drops usually mean a router-side event such as a scheduled reboot or a band-steering feature, not a faulty feeder.
How to stop cats stealing each other’s food
Portion timing alone does not solve this. Separate the cats in space rather than in time: run two feeders in different rooms, use a dual-silo or dual-bowl unit such as AQUA-10B1 with two separate hoppers, and feed the fastest eater first so the slower cat eats undisturbed. A raised bowl also helps cats that prefer to eat apart.
